Mountain olives represent a unique and precious heritage in the world of olive growing. Cultivated in areas characterized by high altitude, these olive groves can enjoy a unique environment that contributes to the quality and sensorial richness of the olives and the extra virgin olive oil produced.
The olive groves on the hills enjoy particular environmental conditions that distinguish them from the olive groves on the plains. The cooler temperatures of mountain areas, combined with greater and varied exposure to sunlight, create an ideal microclimate for the growth and development of olive trees. The altitude brings with it lower humidity and a greater daily temperature range, factors that positively influence the ripening process of the olives.
Another factor that can make the difference is the soil: the olives grown in these areas are often exposed to a variety of mountain terrains, characterized by mineral soils rich in nutrients. These soils, often formed by glacial and volcanic sediments, give the olives a unique profile of minerals and nutrients that are reflected in the flavor and complexity of the extra virgin olive oil.
Mountain rhymes with nature and biodiversity: the mountainous area offers an ideal environment for organic farming and the sustainable production of extra virgin olive oil. The limited presence of industries and human activities significantly reduces environmental pollution and contributes to the purity and authenticity of the final product.
In the article, we will explore in more depth the advantages and benefits of this form of cultivation and production.
Mountain olive groves in Abruzzo
- Balanced maturation – The cool temperatures of the Abruzzo mountains favor a slow and balanced maturation of the olives, giving their oil a unique complexity of aromas.
- Mineral Soils – The mineral soils of the Abruzzo hills enrich the olives with essential nutrients, contributing to the distinctive quality of Abruzzo extra virgin olive oil.
- Terraced Management – The terraced topography of the Abruzzo hills allows for optimal management of the olive groves, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and high-quality production.
- Uncontaminated Environment – The uncontaminated environment of the Abruzzo mountains preserves the purity and authenticity of the extra virgin olive oil, offering an authentic and high quality product.
- Territorial Expression – The high-altitude olive groves in Abruzzo represent an excellent expression of the territory, giving their oil a distinctive character and a unique cultural value.

The advantages of mountain oil
The place of origin is not a sufficient factor to determine the quality of an olive oil; However, climate changes have also had an important impact on olives: these fruits are born, grow and begin the ripening phase during the summer season. However, with the increasingly hot summers that we are facing, especially in the Mediterranean area, the accumulation of heat compromises the composition of fatty acids and polyphenols, worsening the organoleptic value of the future extra virgin olive oil. Even though it has a limited impact on the flavour, the beneficial qualities of the oil are affected by this factor, and this makes mountain oil even more special: the freshness of the mountains in fact protects the olives from the oxidation of fatty acids and polyphenols, allowing to the key properties of extra virgin olive oil to remain unchanged despite climate changes.
Not only the final product, the mountain also protects the olives from parasites: in recent years, unfortunately, attacks by flies, insects whose larvae feed by digging into the drupes of the olive tree, are increasingly widespread, compromising their quality and yield. Chemical agents and pesticides, as well as bait placed in the fields, certainly represent a solution - at least palliative - to the problem, but not always a healthy one. Here too, the mountain can make the difference: these insects, harmful to the olives and the extra virgin oil derived from them, cannot survive above 500 meters above sea level.
Extra virgin olive oil coming from mountain olive groves therefore represents a truly 100% organic food, the answer to the typical contaminations of lowland olive groves. A product with an invaluable yield and a unique flavor that you can also find among the Valle Tritàna products: find out here our Tritàno Oil, a precious gift, to be savored drop by drop, produced in a valley which, among vineyards and olive groves, is the emblem of Abruzzo that wins, especially at the table.
