In the vast Italian wine panorama, the mountain regions undoubtedly play a fundamental role, offering unique and distinctive wines that reflect the territory and the harsh yet varied climate of the high mountains. Among these regions, Abruzzo emerges as one of the wine excellences, celebrated for its native varieties and the production of quality wines. In this article, we will explore the distinctive characteristics and benefits of wines produced in the mountains, with special attention to Abruzzo which, in addition to the mountains, is also characterized as a seaside region, with a climate that represents a real panacea in food and wine terms.

Mountain wines: characteristics and peculiarities

As anticipated, the wines produced in the mountains are distinguished by a series of unique characteristics; peculiarities dictated by the ecosystem in which the vineyards are grown.
Some of the distinctive traits include:

  1. Altitude: the location in the mountains offers particular climatic conditions, difficult to find at other altitudes, with large temperature variations between day and night. The altitude helps maintain acidity in the grapes, giving freshness and liveliness to the wine.
  2. soil: Mountain terrains often feature a wide variety of soils that influence the character of the wine. Geological and climatic conditions contribute to developing complexity and depth in flavours.
  3. Sun exposure: mountain vineyards can be exposed to different solar inclinations, resulting in variations in the ripening of the grapes and in the aromatic complexity.
  4. Climate variations: the mountains are subject to variable climatic conditions, which can represent a challenge for winemakers but which, at the same time, can give the wine a unique personality, reflecting the climatic trend of the vintage.
  5. Grape varieties: Grape varieties grown in the mountains are often adapted to harsh environmental conditions and can exhibit different and particular characteristics compared to their counterparts grown in the plains.

Wines of Abruzzo: a treasure of tradition

Our Abruzzo is a region that stretches along the central Adriatic ridge, and represents a real heritage for its wine production at an international level, with a thousand-year history and a rich variety of native vines. The mountains, the sea and the large surface of uncontaminated nature have allowed Abruzzo to earn the prestigious nickname of "Green Region of Europe", with three national parks, a regional park, a protected marine area and over thirty nature reserves which characterize our territory as the largest naturalistic area on the continent. Unique and exceptional characteristics, which offer an ideal environment for the cultivation of vines and for the production of very high quality wines in large quantities.

Main wine varieties

Abruzzo is mainly known for two varieties of native vines:

  1. Montepulciano: a grape variety that has no ties to the city of Montepulciano in Tuscany. It is widely cultivated in Abruzzo and produces full-bodied, fruity red wines with a good tannic structure. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one of the most popular and appreciated red wines worldwide.
  2. Trebbiano: a white grape variety from which fresh, fruity and aromatic wines are produced. It is widely used for the production of dry white wines and dessert wines.

In addition to the two best-known wine varieties, Abruzzo is home to minor native grape varieties, such as Pecorino and Passerina, which are also growing strongly at a national and international level thanks to their uniqueness and complexity.
